The Takeda Science Foundation, a public interest incorporated foundation in Japan, has provided fixed-amount scholarships for medical professionals from Taiwan to undertake advanced study and training in Japan annually since 1964. Applications are now open for study and training opportunities during the 2027 Japanese academic year (April 1, 2027–March 31, 2028).
The application period is from now until October 15, 2026. Interested applicants are encouraged to submit their applications in accordance with the relevant requirements.
Scholarship Eligibility and Award Details
Designated Period of Study in Japan: April 1, 2027–March 30, 2028
Designated Location of Study: Japan
I. Eligibility
Researchers in medical- or pharmaceutical-related fields who hold an MD or PhD are eligible to apply. Preference will be given to applicants who hold a medical license.
Applicants who meet any of the following conditions will be deemed ineligible and will be excluded from the selection process:

Currently residing in Japan or currently undertaking study or training in Japan

Active-duty military personnel or civilian employees serving with the military

Previous recipients of the Takeda Scholarship

Applicants whose annual income is JPY 6 million or more as of April 1, 2027 (approximately NTD 1.25 million, see Note 1)
II. Application Procedure
Applicants interested in applying should contact the designated contact person in advance to obtain a login account for the scholarship application website. Applicants should then complete the application in accordance with the attached application manual.

Complete CVs in both Chinese and English

Research proposal in English, including the research motivation and objectives

Copy of the official permission for training/study in Japan (see Note 2)

Letter of recommendation from the president/director of the medical institution where the applicant is employed

III. Scholarship Benefits

Monthly stipend: JPY 300,000
-
One round-trip economy-class air ticket between Taiwan and Japan
IV. Number of Scholarships
-
One- to two-year program: 1 recipient (limited to applicants aged 35 or under)

Six-month program: 1 recipient

Three-month program: 2 recipients
V. Important Notes
-
Recipients are required to arrive in Japan by June 30, September 30, or December 31, in accordance with the Japanese academic schedule.

Scholarship recipients will be selected by the Takeda Scholarship Selection Committee and notified individually.

Applicants may not concurrently receive other scholarships or grants totaling JPY 200,000 or more per month, such as the JSPS fellowship.
Notes
1. The actual amount in New Taiwan dollars will be calculated based on the exchange rate designated by the Takeda Science Foundation for 2027.
2. The permission for training/study refers to an official invitation letter or letter of acceptance issued by the applicant’s Japanese academic supervisor or host institution.
