The National Science and Technology Council (NSTC) and the British Academy (BA) have jointly launched a bilateral researcher exchange program to encourage researchers from Taiwan and the United Kingdom to conduct collaborative research in the fields of Humanities and Social Sciences.
In 2000, the NSTC and BA signed a cooperation agreement and jointly launched the International Partnership and Mobility (IPM) Scheme for researchers in the humanities and social sciences. In 2017, both parties agreed to discontinue the IPM Scheme and subsequently launched a bilateral researcher exchange program based on the Small Research Grant (SRG).
This is a one-year project. With the agreement of both the Taiwan and UK sides, the project may be extended for a maximum of one additional year. However, visits may not be conducted for the purpose of negotiating collaboration with other research institutions or attending other international academic conferences.
Funding
The maximum funding available from the Taiwan side is NT$200,000 per project per year, to support expenses directly related to bilateral researcher exchange activities based on small-scale research, including:
-
Travel expenses for reciprocal visits between Taiwan and the UK
(transportation, living expenses, visa, and insurance expenses). The sending party shall be responsible for the international airfare and living expenses of its research team. -
Operating expenses
Expenses directly related to the project, including consumables, specialized software, translation services related to the research field, temporary research assistants/student workers, and expenses for bilateral seminars or discussion sessions held during the visit. The following expenses are not eligible for funding: equipment, printing of conference or research proceedings, souvenirs or staff uniforms, conference registration fees, annual membership or joining fees for academic societies, and commissioned testing services.
Expenses for organizing meetings shall be covered by the host country. Meetings may be held either in the United Kingdom or Taiwan.
Eligibility and Application
The Taiwan-side principal investigator must meet the eligibility requirements for principal investigators specified in the NSTC Guidelines for the Implementation of Research Project Grants.
Applicants from Taiwan and the UK must simultaneously submit applications separately to the NSTC and the counterpart organization (BA). An application will only be considered valid once applications have been submitted by both principal investigators.
The project period is expected to run from May 1, 2027 to April 30, 2028, for a total duration of one year. Please refer to the attached document for further details regarding the call for proposals.
Applicants interested in applying are requested to complete and submit the online application by November 1, 2026, the university’s internal deadline. Please also copy the Research and Development Office upon submission to facilitate the compilation and forwarding of applications to the NSTC.
